In 2007, the Montana Legislature passed a law to refund up to $400 of property taxes paid in 2006 for a principal residence, if certain qualifications are met. You only have until December 31, 2007 to apply. According to a recent newsletter, the Dept. of Revenue figures that only about 50% of the eligible homeowners in Montana have applied.

Basically, to qualify for the refund, you must meet the requirements, which include:

1) You had to be the owner of residential property in 2006.

2) You had to live in the property as your principal residence for at least 7 months during 2006.

3) You are required to have paid at least $400 in property taxes to get the full $400 refund.

You can see all of the qualifications and apply online here: http://mt.gov/revenue/propertytaxrefund.asp      You can also print out a form at that website and apply in writing.

I encourage everyone to double check with your friends and family that might have owned a home in 2006 to verify that they have applied for their refund. Moves, divorces, deaths and other life changes often get in the way of remembering these types of things.

Horaayy..there are 3 comment(s) for me so far ;)

As far as I’m concerned, they sent me a bill with a due date to pay it. I mailed back a check and they cashed it. No questions asked and I didn’t have to “swear” to anything.

It’s MY money and they should have applied it as a credit to my next tax bill. I’m not giving the govt any more info for their data base. They can shove the $400!

It amazes me that anyone could NOT know about this - or that anyone could forget to claim their rebate quickly!

Ele, Thanks so much for commenting! The State probably should have just applied the $400 to the next tax bill instead of going through more paperwork. However our legislature voted to do it this way so what can we do? *shrug* Nothing can be simple when it comes to taxes or government, right?
The State already has all of your info…now they just want you to verify that you are the correct person to receive your refund back.
Thanks again for taking the time to read & comment!
